Asperger’s syndrome is a form of autism that affects children from every walk of life. Aspberger’s has been getting more attention recently. Children that may have been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD, are now being reevaluated as possibly having Asperger’s. Children with Asperger’s may have learning disabilities, this is usually one of the first things a parent or teacher notices.

Symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome

A child that may be noticeably lacking in normal social skills. They may be very loud, when they are just having a normal conversation. They also may demonstrate a lack of good judgment in a social atmosphere. Things like standing very close to a person whom they are conversing with is a sign or the inability to acknowledge personal space. Some children may have delayed speech as well. They may also have a very hard time adapting to any kind of change in their normal routine.

A child with Asperger’s can also be the opposite of the above symptoms, and be completely withdrawn. Their social skills are completely lacking, and they may appear to be extremely shy. They have difficulty making eye contact, and are not able to relate to children their own age. Some children have a very monotone speech pattern, and may be very difficult to understand. They may also become very distressed, if they are forced to be do any kind of public speaking. Another symptom, a very specific interest in one topic or one toy.
Diagnosing Asperger’s

There are no set tests to determine a child has Asperger’s Syndrome. A doctor will discuss certain behaviors with the parents or other adults who are a part of the child’s life. IQ tests, speech tests, and motor skills tests may also be performed to further evaluate a child.

Treatment of Asperger’s

If your child has been positively diagnosed with Asperger’s, there is good news and bad news. The good news, many children outgrow the symptoms, and are able to lead normal, adult lives. The bad news, there is no miracle medicine to treat Asperger’s. It can be managed with behavioral therapy, speech therapy and possibly special education classes for the child. A parent will need to be very involved with the child’s education. There are programs available in all schools for students that have special needs. At home parents can continue to boost the child’s self confidence, and provide an ongoing education in social skills.
