How to Identify Autism Symptoms
Autism affects people in so many different ways, it can be difficult to diagnose. Autism affects the neurological functions in a person’s brain. A person may be what is called high functioning, which means they have very few symptoms. They will most likely be able to be in a regular classroom situation, and social situations. A high functioning autistic person, may need very little help to function on their own. A person that has more severe symptoms, will need more care, and special accommodations.

Social Symptoms of Autism
Autism affects the way a person can interact with other people. In some cases, a person may be extremely withdrawn. Others may be extremely over friendly, and talk to anybody and everybody. The withdrawn person may not be able to make eye contact with other people. The inability to have a conversation is another symptom. In both cases, a person with autism may not be able to express empathy. They are not able to understand why something may hurt another’s feelings, or that something may be taken as being rude in society. An individual who has the outgoing symptoms, may talk too loud or stand very close to somebody they are talking with. A lack of social skills is a key indicator when diagnosing autism.
Speech Development Symptoms in Autism
A person may have difficulty speaking or verbalizing what they want or need. In children, it may be noticed as a speech delay. It is estimated about 40% of people diagnosed with autism, are not able to speak at all. A person may also repeatedly say the same word or phrase. Understanding a normal conversation may be difficult for somebody with autism. They have a hard time detecting humor or sarcasm, and tend to take things literally.
Other Autism Symptoms
People who are diagnosed or suspected of having autism, usually show signs by the age of 3. Children may have the social and speech issues, which may lead to a parent really observing their child. A child may have a very hard time playing with other children the same age. A child with autism may become very focused on one toy or one type of toy. The absolute need for routine may be noticed. If a child cannot tolerate even a minor change in their routine, it could be an indicator of autism. They may also rock back and forth for no apparent reason.
